A £1 MILLION re-development of Dorney Lake, which is due to stage the rowing and canoe kayaking events during the 2012 London Olympics, has been approved.

The improvements at the centre, conceived, built and owned by Eton College, were given the go-ahead by South Bucks Council.

They include a widening of the eight-lane lake and a new finishing line bridge.

The width of the return leg entrance of the lake, which hosted the World Rowing Championships in 2006, needs to double to cope with the number of boats in 2012.

A private access route will also be widened to allow the construction of bridges before it is reverted back to its current state after the Games.

Ivor Lloyd, managing director of the Centre, said the changes, lodged with South Bucks by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), were needed to make the site "compatible with the Olympic requirements".

South Bucks are also discussing with the ODA transport plans.

About 26,000 spectators are expected to the Olympic events in Dorney, which has a population of around 700.

The action will run at the lake from July 28 to August 11 before the Paralympics comes to the venue from September 1-3.
